Is it Summer Vacation Yet?

It’s official, I’ve been back at college for two days and I’m ready for another summer vacation. I’ve had my fill of education, learned my lessons, and I’ve decided that experience is the best teacher. Can I go home now?

No?

Ugh.

Okay, I’ll stop having a bad attitude now, as I’m sure it’s not fun to read about. Rest assured, there will be some fabulous recipes coming up soon. I’m just working on putting the posts and final photos together, so in the meantime, I will bring you along with me on a trip down memory lane to my first day back at school. Because I know that all of you who are out of school are just dying to experience it again.

Seriously, I’m trying to stop being so sarcastic. Bear with me.

Let’s start at the very beginning—a very good place to start (name that movie line!).

There I was, calmly, surprisingly-non-trippingly strolling down the hallway of my second-favorite building at school (it loses points because it smells like a dentist’s office), on my way to the first class of the day—Government. After turning the corner, effortlessly dodging the harried students buzzing past me, I came upon my classroom—the one that I so cleverly made a note of in my planner so I wouldn’t forget. Peeking in the slit window in the door, much to my chagrin, I saw a classroom full of people. With that, I steeled myself for a room full of gawking stares—as always happens when you enter a full classroom—and quietly stepped inside and found a seat.

The teacher seemed friendly and personable. “I’m think I’m gonna like this class,” I thought to myself contentedly. The people sitting around me were relaxed and chatty, putting me at ease.

Wait…why is the teacher talking about Sociology?”

As the teacher’s introductory speech continued, I slowly felt a sinking feeling in my heart as I realized that I was sitting in the wrong class. Thankfully, she dismissed the class soon after and I made a seamless exit with the rest of the students that were actually supposed to be there.

It’s okay. I must have just come too early. My class must be up next,” I soothed myself, taking up a spot to the side of the hallway with another large group of students who appeared to be waiting outside my classroom. After a short while, a teacher arrived and the mass of people progressed into the room, with me in tow. With a relieved sigh, I sat down in a chair, glad to have gotten that little hiccup out of the way.

“Everyone’s here for Intro to Sociology, right?” the teacher absentmindedly called to the room.

My eyes briefly widened with shock before I smoothly gathered the books and purse that I had just set down and wordlessly breezed past the teacher as she turned around to close the door. At this point, I was freaking out a little bit. “Where is my class?!” I thought in a panic, whipping out my iPod Touch to check my schedule on the school’s website. Breathing deeply to calm my now fluttering heartbeat, I read the information printed plainly on my tiny iPod screen.

I did not have Government first—I had Accounting first, Government second.

With a weary, shaky sigh, I proceeded down the hallway to the correct classroom, yet again being greeted by a room full of stares as I tried to hold on to a shred of dignity, now twenty minutes late to my first class of the semester.

Honestly, I’m not too keen on my Accounting class. The room has no windows, there’s a grand total of ten students, and the classroom is eerily quiet. I may check out my schedule and switch to another time. Last semester I really wanted to drop my Chemistry class, but did not—a decision that I regretted daily afterwards.

After getting out of Accounting, I had a couple hours to kill—since the two-hour class let out quite early—and decided to grab a snack. As I went to get my homemade granola bars out of my purse, I realized that I forgot them at home.

Great.”

Thankfully, I saw a guy near me in the library who was drinking a Starbucks iced coffee and immediately got a coffee craving, plus, getting off campus for a while sounded pretty nice. I don’t know if you’re aware of this or not, but I don’t like crowds—especially loud, misguided, first-day-of-school crowds. They make me jumpy.

So, for a little break from the packed halls (which will be half as full within two weeks), I hopped in the car and headed to Starbucks, enjoying some lovely tunes on the way.

Have I mentioned that Keith Harkin’s voice is more soothing that hugging a teddy bear? It is.

After a quick trip to Starbucks, I proceeded to snag a fantastic study room and settled in for a nice little snackie. Namely, this snackie…

donut

A creamy, frothy decaf cappuccino and a delightful donut. With that in hand, I settled in to read for a bit. Right now I’m reading “The Crow” by Alison Croggon, which is part of her Pellinor series—to which I am beyond addicted. If you ever happen upon one of these books, I highly recommend giving it a try. I can’t put ‘em down, and highly resent school for taking up hours of my reading time.

Just because I have the attention span of a Pomeranian—look at my cool bookmark!

Oh, and I can’t forget to show you my bangles!

bangles

I heart bangles.

And cute purses…

Okay, show-and-tell done. Suffice it to say, I self-medicate unpleasant experiences with accessories.

After hanging out there for a bit, I headed to Government, finally in the correct classroom. Surprisingly, we didn’t even talk about Government. My teacher instead chose to quiz us on the entire history of rock n’ roll. That day, we made it up to the sixties. I earned myself one point for merely attending class and one for squeaking out a whispery (and incorrect) answer to an Elvis question. Am I the only person whose vocal chords constrict their voice into a breathless whisper whenever they have to speak in front of a room full of strangers? I hope not, cause it’s a pain.

After a quick trip to Econ today, I’ve got my schedule set up. Now I just have to keep doing the same thing over and over for the next four months.

I get the feeling that there’s going to be a lot of new bangles in my future.

I bet that snack could fix any rough first day! Accounting sounds like a terribly boring class, regardless of the classroom or class size! Good luck with it 🙂

lol Koci, this is the first time in my life that I do not have to go back to school and it feels so weird. Your first day sounds exactly like all of mine. So icky, often awkward, and somehow always ending with Starbucks!

The first few days of the semester always feel like it's going to take forever, but then before you know it, it's gone!

Love the book mark and bangles, and especially that bag! How cute is that?!

Thanks baking.serendipity! I must admit, there are few things that can't be soothed with a cappuccino and donut. 😀

@Marisa: It's so nice to hear that I'm not alone in my poor adjustment to the whole back-to-school thing. hehe I must say, I do heart that bag a lot–it has lightning bolts for zippers for goodness sakes!!

@May: haha Indeed! You're right, things have already gotten better. 🙂

Like, Thunderstorm zippers…bringing us back to Keith Harkin. Seriously, his songs just seem so comforting and familiar (like a favorite song, not like "oh, i've heard this a zillion times") even when hearing them for the first time. Very home-y!
I am rather jealous of your two-class schedule, I'm still on the eight-class day that ensures five hours at school.

Becky, I actually have a 4-class schedule, the classes are just on alternating days. 🙂

Darn you for posting a pic of the Starbucks donut! Those are the best old fashioned cake donut I have ever had and now I am craving one. That with a latte definitely helps get you through those longs days!

@Dana: Thanks, I find my accessory-snackie coping techniques very effective. 😀

@Debbie: hehehe I love Starbucks' donuts so much! They're so soft and moist and dense–perfect for dipping!

I would be lying if I said I've never experienced your first day of school a few times over. How awful. Glad you made it through the day, though!

Actually just last week, I accidentally grabbed Mani's laptop for school (we have the same MacBook) and only realized it when my Secured Transactions class started. This was NOT the right class to come unprepared for since we get called on randomly to discuss the answers to our homework problems…which were on my laptop. I wound up using one of my two "passes" for the semester to prevent a grade reduction in case I got called on. And then later that day, someone stole my umbrella. And it was raining outside. Great!

Btw, those muffins look divine! And where did you get those bangles??? I must know. Have a great weekend!

Ohhh that's pretty awful, Val! At least you had that free pass though! Secured Transactions doesn't sound like a walk in the park at all. I'm just starting a basic Business Law class this semester and I can't imagine anything more advanced!

Regarding the bangles, I got them at LuLus.com. They've got tons of really cute jewelry for under $20! My favorite bangles are from Amrita Singh, but I can only get them on sale since they run a lot more expensive.
